Site Doctor

Prevention Is Better Than The Cure

WordPress sites can begin to suffer performance problems leaving the site administrator with the task of debugging the problem. Often this can be a frustrating task if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

WPRanger can carry out a review of your WordPress site and give advice on any performance or security issues found. Where applicable, problems can be fully diagnosed and solutions to fix them detailed.

From the Blog

WP Upload Permissions

I built on the script: File Permission Lister that I released earlier in the week. I ended up creating a WordPress plugin as promised. The whole thing is effectively built from scratch and is called WP Upload Permissions.

File Permission Lister

I often voluntarily answer support queries on the wordpress.org support forums. One regular issue pops up that relates to incorrectly set file permissions on a WordPress uploads directory. This inevitably leads to problems with uploading and displaying media.

FAQ

What does one-off support mean?

A one-off support incident is just what it sounds. You have a single problem with your WordPress site and I fix it for you. The incidents can fall into one of three levels, the determining factor being time taken to complete the task. I will happily carry out a number of smaller tasks as one incident but in this case the higher priced level will always apply.

I will always enter into a dialogue with a client prior to work commencing so that we both have a clear view of what’s expected.

How do I pay you?

All work is carried out in good faith and invoiced upon completion. If your project is extensive or labour intensive, I will ask that we agree on the payment of a retainer.

I accept PayPal, Stripe and GoCardless payment methods. Occasionally beer.

Will you design my WordPress theme?

Maybe. My main business is WordPress support however I may be able to assist you building your bespoke WordPress theme. I will also happily customise your existing or new theme to suit your needs.

Will you manage my WordPress site?

A range of managed support plans are in the pipeline and will be available before the end of this current year. It must be noted however that a properly managed WordPress site and hosting environment can be a time consuming task and this will be reflected in a realistic but competitive price structure.

Do you provide web hosting for WordPress sites?

No. I’m not in the hosting business. However, I can advise on the best hosting solution on a case by case basis and assist clients in setting up new hosting accounts or servers.

What are my login credentials?

When carrying out work on your WordPress site or installing WordPress on your server/hosting environment, I need one or more sets of login credentials.

WordPress

Add User

I need administrator level login credentials to your WordPress site.

Ideally you should create a new user on your site and grant that user administrator privileges before forwarding me the details.

FTP, SFTP or SSH

ftpclient

Although I can carry out some work without the need for FTP or SSH access, should something go wrong during my work, it’s likely this would ultimately require the enhanced access I request anyway. Again, the creation of a temporary account on your server would be the ideal situation.

In order of preference, I would request access by:

  1. ssh
  2. sftp
  3. ftp

You can obtain details of the required access credentials from your hosts, usually through your hosting login such as cpanel or similar. If you don’t know how to do this, I can advise you accordingly.

I accept that most people may only be able to provide FTP access. (Grumble mumble!)
